Tom Zhang has 15+ years of talent acquisition & HR experience at leading tech companies (Google, Tesla and Tencent) and startup companies in Silicon Valley. He was on the Google international staffing team and recruited for 12 countries in EMEA and APAC. He was the first Tesla HR for APAC and helped build the early team in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.

Tom worked with venture capital firms (GGV Capital, Skyview Fund, Skywood Capital) as venture scout/partner to research investment opportunities, source deals, and help portfolio startup founders identify talent grow strategies to scale their business.

At Harmony, Tom is on the mission of recruiting crazy ones to join the blue army for the blue Materverse.

Tom received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University. He likes swimming, hiking, rowing and reading on weekends.

  • Collect data and write a report on Harmony’s current talent acquisition process and propose recommendation to improve efficiency. Engage 10 developers from leading tech companies.

8 - I strongly believe that everybody gets a chance to share ideas in a high performing team. Everybody's voice matters.
I understand that listening builds trust. Listening reduces misunderstandings. Talking too much in meetings means lost productivity.
8 - I am fairly open-minded. My knowledge and expertise has limitation. I want to learn something new from other people.
When @Leo Chen told me about the Bored Ape NFTs last year, I think the price is way too high. 20 eths? too expensive! It turned out that I was wrong. Now I have deeper knowledge on BAYC.
7 - The ancient Chinese Master Zengzi said, “I make self reflections three times a day.” It is important for us to be reflective and open to feedback in order to develop a true sense of self.
I realized the importance of self-awareness. Without it, we may have a harder time understanding and improving our self-management. Self-awareness can create better self-knowledge.

8 - I am a people person and enjoy meeting new friends.
I founded a hiking group in Bay Area. Members are engineers, VCs and entreprenaours. .
7 - I realized that my daily job is chatting with people online using different tool: WeChat, Telegram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn.
I have 28k connections on LinkedIn and 350k followers on Weibo (twitter in China) .
8 - Being a mentor serves as a way to give back and is an important development and learning experience.
I was a lecturer at San Jose State University before joining Google. I understand educators can help empower students to become a learner and impact theirs lives.

8 - Good leaders share success and let others shine. Leaders pass the credit and take the blame.
I think teams innovate fast. A team can achieve far more than any individual working alone. That's obvious.
9 - Totally agree. Employees make or break business. A business is only as successful as its employees, and that goes for any industry.
I really Steve Jobs’ quote “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do”.
6 - Sometimes I try to avoid conflict. Good arguments may be painful, but they get things out into the open.
I understand that arguing allows both sides to express their feelings and ideas relating to the issue. Good arguing can be beneficial to team relationships.

I like the quote “A shortcut is the longest distance between two points.”
7 - Devil is in the details. Attention to details means producing consistent, high-quality work. You don’t need to return to fix past mistakes.
As a HR/recruiter, I believe many hiring managers say that typos or bad grammar on a resume are deal breakers.
8 - I like this quote from Steve Jobs. “stay hungry, stay foolish” means we should always be curious to learn more, be ready to try new things, and achieve more.
I'm a big believer in lifelong learning. The world of web3, crypo, metaverse change rapidly. I read a lot and watch YouTube videos.

7 - I believe the future will be decentralized. Web3 will reshape the world.
I am fascinated with DAO (decentralized autonomous organization). It’s amazing to see Compound, MakersDAO achieve more than traditional banks with much less resources. No CEO, no VPs, no managers, no HR, no legal. DAO will be the future org.
9 - Entrepreneurship is fundamentally linked to risk-taking. You may be leaving a steady-paying job, risking your reputation with new products.
I am an optimistic risk-taker. I want to embrace risk-taking. It is exciting to be surrounded by passionate team members to dream bigger.
8- Living without long-term goals is like going on a road trip without a map. long-term goals give you focus and energy.
As a HR/recruiting professional, my long term goal is to recruit the best-qualified people, build a winning team and recognize and encourage the value of diversity
Authentic
8 - Consistency is key to achieving long term results. Small consistent actions lead to big changes.
I practiced intermittent fasting since March 2020. It’s been 2 years for me to skip breakfast. I lost more than 10 pounds.
7- We have to make difficult decisions. Some decisions are stressful because there are no good choices.
I love to extend offers to great candidates but hate to lay off employees. But layoff is part of my HR job. It was painful. Once I had to lay off a designer before Christmas. She cried in front of me. Tears all over her face. My heart was broken.
8 - Agree. Admitting mistakes makes one more courageous.
I made lots of mistakes in my career, e.g. hire a wrong person. I think it's ok to admit I was wrong, deal with the consequences, accept the correction, and learn to do better next time.

6 - The best engineers bring more to the table than just coding. A 10x engineer is 10 times better at their job than their peers. T
I am not the top 1% super star, but always strive to be the best person I can be.
6 - The best developers distinguish themselves by writing bug free code right away.
Writing bug-free code is a good trait. As a HR professional, I want to get things done right at the first time.
8 - Harmony is scaling web3 via zkp & dao, will serve as a unifying Web3 platform in 2026.
We have a clear and focused team goal. I will do my part in the best way and help create a productive and supporting environment.

Impact
8 - Harmony is working to scale trust for billions of people and create a radically fair economy. That’s huge impact on the world.
Eisenhower's urgent/important principle is the simplest way to stay productive and do the right work. Important activities have an outcome that leads to us achieving our goals.
6 - Being busy Is not an accomplishment. We should always think how our work to achieve our team goals.
I often fall into the urgency trap. Focusing on tasks that are urgent but aren't necessarily important. I should prioritize my work. A task that's not urgent but important will help achieve long-term goals.
8 - Innovation is managed chaos. Said Eric Schmidt, former Chairman of Google/Alphabet
Tesla has a scrappy culture, but I enjoyed it. Tesla wants its culture to embolden and empower its employees to think creatively and seek solutions that will continuously improve the products and operation. Although I am a HR, I helped sold at least 50 cars.
