10x Gaming/Gamefi Launch Plan

Executive Summary

The gaming and gamefi space has reached a point of product-market fit and, could potentially, be the conduit to bringing millions of people into web3 because of its intuitive nature and ease-of-use.

This document aims to lay out a strategy for how Harmony could win in the gaming/gamefi space. Namely:

  1. Partner with Studio of Studios
  2. Partner with curated list of A and AA studios
  3. Create attractive offering for web2 game developers: Create an attractive offering for indy game developers that is welcoming and makes their job easier, where they can focus on player acquisition, and less on the infrastructure plumbing.
  4. Commit larger % of current grant program to game/gamefi proposals.
  5. Strategic Investments in Up-and-Coming AAA Games

Definitions

  • Indy Developer: This term refers to a game developer who is not associated with any specific publisher. Indy developers can be a team of 1 to 9 persons.
  • Single A Studio: Single A studio refers to an organization of developers, marketers, and influencers that builds games and publishes them. Typically, a Studio has existing relationship with many indy developers as well as larger publishers and their distribution channels.
  • Double AA Studio: Similar to Single A studio, this refers to an organization of developers, marketers, and influencers that builds games and publishes them. Typically, a Studio has existing relationship with many indy developers as well as larger publishers and their distribution channels.

The Market

Based on market research, interviews with industry professionals, and primary research, weโ€™ve formed a thesis on the target market that we believe will give Harmony the highest probability of success.

In gaming, publishers and studios are often referred to as A, AA, AAA, which describes their quality and level of market dominance. On the x-axis, we see Low, Medium, High. The target market we are after are:

  1. Publishers and studios that are A, AA.
  2. Publishers and studios whose readiness is Low, Medium, High, where readiness is defined as the willingness and capability to commercially commit titles to aspects of the blockchain. We want to focus on studios that are commercially ready to commit titles to the blockchain where our effort to convince is low.

Contrast the above with a known competitor, Polygon Studios. They are carefully forming a top-notch team of executives from AAA publishers. Their target market is primarily AAA studios, whose readiness ranges from Low to High. They are taking a very long-view of the market and are willing to educate, be patient, and partner for the long-term. Visually, the Polygon Studio strategy looks like the following:

Harmony Adoption Flywheel

To usher in the next several million users and developers to web3, we believe gaming and gamefi will be that conduit. Harmony plans to be a key player in making that happen. Our plan is to enable the flywheel effect of bringing fun, easy, and profitable games to Harmony, which brings in players, and as those games become successful, more developers will want to join the Harmony community.

Why Not AAA?

After speaking with the CEO of Niantic and high-level executives at other AAA studios, itโ€™s clear that, while thereโ€™s interest in blockchain, thereโ€™s little appetite to do anything tangible in the space and thereby impacting the current business model which has worked well for AAA publishers so far. But, many are looking hard into web3.

So I propose that we keep this opportunity open, but prepare AAA studios via educational materials and helping them to better understand their role in web3. But AAA studios will not be a target market of ours in the near future.

In contrast to this approach, Polygon Studios aims to be the partner to AAA studios. We believe that is worthwhile, but sales cycles are longer and emphasis on educating the gaming community is much larger, which extends the time to market, longer than we want.

Our Approach, Trade-offs, and Timeline

Our approach will be the following:

  4. Commit larger % of current grant program to game/gamefi proposals

Refocused Grant Program

Make no other change to the grant program, other than put a greater emphasis and more outreach for game/gamefi grant applications.

Strategic Investments

Make strategic investments in up-and-coming AAA blockchain games. Harmony is in talks with a few very promising games due to launch in 2022 that have the potential to be breakthrough games. Harmony seeks to be an investor in these games, provided Harmony becomes a chain on which these games deploy.

Early Success

GMFrens.Games: We met the GMFrens team also at GDC. They are both a publisher and incubator, aiming to educate web2 game developers enter the web3 world. Our partnership acts as a funnel for Harmony, bringing in more developers into the Harmony ecosystem.

XYZZY: We met XYZZY at the GDC conference. Upon coming home from the conference, we followed-up and XYZZY fit our criteria exactly. We entered into a formal partnership with them and are now in the middle of getting the first game deployed on Harmony - Kart Racing League.

Next Steps

  1. Organize pipeline of A, AA studios and do outreach.
  2. Work on pitch and approach
  3. Create offering for indy devs, focusing on tooling and integration with game engines
  4. Investigate SDK integration with Unity, Unreal, Lumberjack, and other game engines
  5. Close 2-3 Studios per month
